We’ve been taught that change requires willpower and discipline. But there’s a much easier way, and I’m sharing it with you in this week’s Summer Secret.
Welcome to The Self-Creation School podcast, for women who are ready to ditch mediocrity, step up and get more of what they want, and finally say YES! to a life that sets their soul on fire. I’m your host Leanne Letica, Self-Creation Coach, founder of The Self-Creation School AND Queen of YES!. If you’re ready to play life by your own personal rule book, and give yourself permission to say YES! to yourself and your wildest dreams, this podcast is the place for you.
We are at week twelve in the series. Can you believe this is our second last secret? It has been such a transformational summer for me. I really hope it has been for you too. And a special thanks to the listeners who have reached out to share their Summer Secrets journey with me. I love so much hearing from you and seeing the impact of your own pause to consider what truly matters this season.
Now a quick note before we get into the episode. If you are just discovering the series, the best place to start is right back at the beginning, since these secrets are designed to build upon each other.
So, last week we talked about embodying your next season identity through small daily choices and micro habits.
But here’s what I know. Relying on willpower alone to sustain those changes can be challenging and it’s not necessary. The easier way to sustain change is through your environment.
Your environment is so much stronger than your willpower, and it really can make or break your success. Think about it, when you’re trying to eat healthier, what works better—telling yourself to have more discipline or just not keeping junk food in the house?
Your environment, and I’m talking about your physical space, your schedule, your daily routines, it can either support the woman you want to be or make it harder for her to show up. And the smart approach is to design your environment so it does the heavy lifting for you.
This is about removing friction from the behaviors you want and adding friction to the behaviors you don’t want. It’s about setting up cues that remind you to be your desired way of being and removing temptations that pull you back into your old ways of being.
So, let’s start with your physical environment.
Think about the next version of you. What does her space look like? Maybe she has a clear, organized workspace that helps her focus. Maybe she has books on her nightstand and her phone charger in another room.
Small changes can make huge differences my friend. Moving your journal to your breakfast table makes morning reflection easier. Keeping a water bottle on your desk makes staying hydrated much more likely. Setting up a dedicated space for the habits you want to build moves to friction of getting started. You get the idea, right?
Now, let’s talk about your schedule.
Your time reflects your priorities and your schedule should support the woman that you want to be. So, take a look at your calendar. Is it set up to support your new way of being or your old way of being? Are you scheduling the things that matter to the woman you want to be?
Then also consider your daily routines, because routines remove decision fatigue and they make your desired behaviors just who you are.
And they don’t need to be perfect routines, by the way. You just need routines that make it easier to be who you want to be. It could be as simple as preparing your lunch the night before, or laying out your gym clothes, or setting a timer to remind you to drink a glass of water.
The goal isn’t to control every moment, but it’s to design your environment so that your default behaviors align with who you want to be instead of who you’ve been.
My friend, when your environment supports your desired identity, you’re not constantly fighting against yourself all day long. You’re not relying on motivation or willpower or discipline to make good choices. You’re simply showing up for the life you’ve designed.
So, this week start by making one small change to your physical space or schedule or daily routine that makes it easier for you to be the woman you want to be.
Maybe you clear out your kitchen pantry to make healthy eating easier. Maybe you block time in your calendar for something that matters to the future you like a regular facial. Maybe you create a morning setup that supports how she starts her day.
Choose one small environmental change and implement it this week. And notice how much easier it becomes to make choices that align with who you want to be when your environment is working with you instead of against you.
Next week is our final Summer Secret. Make sure you join the Summer Secrets email series at https://selfcreationschool.com/created for a reminder to listen in. Or simply subscribe to the show so you do not miss it.
I can’t wait to share it with you.
